At Round About Cafe, community is at the heart of everything we do. Our friendly team of volunteers is here to greet you with a smile and make you feel right at home.
Whether you’re dropping in for a chat, joining in one of our music sessions, or trying out our budget-friendly cookery classes, everything we offer is about bringing people together and building strong connections.
"The Round About Cafe is such a wonderful place for the community with such a great team of volunteers (Shirley to name one of many) and the main man (Nigel) is a true asset in running the cafe. It's a great place for the community with a reasonable priced food menu and amazing barista coffees and good events. It’s definitely worth a visit!"
We’re also passionate about sustainability and supporting those who need it most. Our Community Pantry, launched in January 2022, helps reduce food waste while providing fresh produce and essentials at low cost. For just £1 to become a member, you can access this valuable resource and help make a difference in Southampton.
Round About Café is proudly supported by Abri, one of the South of England’s largest housing providers. Thanks to Abri’s investment and your support, we offer everything from free kids’ lunches and warm spaces, to community events and volunteer training. Together, we’re creating a welcoming place where everyone can feel included, supported, and part of something special.
"This isn’t just a café, it’s a community hub designed to bring people together, not to make a profit" - Nigel Powney, Cafe Supervisor
The most important thing to me is that I always get a happy reception from staff, volunteers, and customers. I always get help when I need it, and it makes my day.

I like coming to the café to meet people and have a chat. I often meet up with friends here—it’s close to home, has a great atmosphere, and fantastic food and drinks. I’m a big fan of stopping to talk to other people while enjoying my cappuccino. Being teetotal, it’s a great alternative to going to the pub!

10 Years of Round About Café and Counting
Round About Café is here to make everyday life a little easier and a lot more connected. Whether it’s a warm meal, someone to chat to, free kids’ activities or affordable groceries, everything we offer is based on what people in this community have told us they need. In 2023, we celebrated our 10th birthday and shared some of the exciting things we've gotten up to since we opened.
From hosting music lessons, cookery classes and "crafternoons", to being in a local show, celebrating D-Day and opening a pantry, all working closely with our partners and Mansbridge to build what has become a warm, welcoming hub for the community.
We spoke to some of our partners over the years, those that have been involved in creating this community and of course our wonderful regulars.
Over the years we’ve seen people grow in confidence, learn new skills, make friends, and feel more at home here.
We’re proud of what this space has become and we’re excited about where it can go next.
Flick through below to read some of the stories that show just what’s possible when a community comes together.
Since April 2022, we’ve teamed up with SoCo Music Project to run regular music sessions at the café. Mansbridge Melody Makers and Junk Orchestra are all about having fun, trying something new, and making music in a relaxed, welcoming space.
“I enjoy the community spirit, the singing, and the variety of music.”
People who come along tell us it helps them feel better, more confident, and more connected.
“I love the positive vibe and meeting new people.”
We’re building a group that supports each other not just through music, but through friendship and fun.
“It’s just a great laugh!”

In response to rising food and energy costs, we partnered with Itchen College to offer free six-week cooking courses focused on affordable, energy-efficient meals using woks. Those that took part said they learned new skills, cooked and ate together, and took home ingredients and a wok to recreate recipes at home.
“I love learning to cook from scratch — and it made my children eat more veg!”
The sessions built confidence, friendships, and support networks, helping people save money and eat healthier.
“Thanks for healthy and easy-to-follow recipes.”
Participants say they now cook regularly using energy-efficient methods and include more fruit and vegetables in their diets. The sessions also included help with meal planning and managing a food budget.
“I like cooking with veg and saving money.”

We teamed up with Wainwrights Chemist to offer free flu jabs to local residents, helping protect those most at risk during flu season.
Wainwrights said "by offering vaccinations for free in a familiar, friendly setting, we made it easier for people to stay protected".
“It was really convenient and saved me the worry of getting to the GP and I felt looked after.” – Local resident
Through our partnership with Southampton Repair Café, we supported local people to repair broken household items helping people save money, reduce waste, and feel more confident tackling everyday fixes.
From toasters to lamps, the sessions gave people the chance to bring items back to life, often with just a simple repair or some expert advice.
“I thought it was beyond saving, but now it’s working again — and I learned something in the process!"
Beyond the practical fixes, the project helped spark a shift in thinking. People told us they’d now think twice before throwing something away, choosing to repair or seek help, instead of replacing. It’s a small but meaningful step toward more sustainable habits and stronger local connections.

Come on in—we’d love to meet you!
I've taken part in the cooking course and craft activities. I've met lots of people through the activities and improved my cooking skills and they helped me with budgeting. It's been great to mix with people of different ages and other people who I wouldn’t normally meet but live in the same area.
